If the fireplace insert is registering an E3 code, it simply means that the heater is not working. An E3 code may appear on both new and used units and will either be due to the safety features triggering or the fan. It is not obvious which of these is the culprit, so please check each of the following:
Error Caused by Safety Features
- It is important to allow the insert to acclimate to its new environment. Regardless of the time of year you've purchased the unit, the temperature inside your home is different from the temperatures of the factory, warehouse, and any other spot along the journey. Allowing it to settle in for a few hours before plugging it in is a best practice for smooth operation.
- Unplug the fireplace insert between uses.
- Do not overload the circuit. Do not plug any other items into the same outlet as the fireplace insert, as it draws a significant amount of power.
- Ensure that the connection between the plug and outlet is tight. A loose outlet will draw too much power, resulting in an error code.
- Only plug the power cord directly into the outlet and NEVER use an extension cord or surge protector.
- Used Units: Check the vents for dirt or clogs. Unplug the unit and clean any dust or debris from the vent area. Leave the fireplace insert unplugged for 5 minutes, plug the power back in and turn on the heater.
Error Due to the Fan
- Unplug the fireplace insert. The unit must remain unplugged for at least 5 minutes in total.
- Remove the insert from the mantel or TV stand.
- Using a hair dryer, blow air through each of the front, top, and rear vents around the fan, clearing away any dust or debris.
4. Plug the fireplace back in to ensure that the fireplace is operational.
5. If operational, reinstall into the mantel or TV stand.
