Fireplace inserts have two safeguards to prevent an electrical fire. First, there is a thermostat limiter which will automatically shut off when the temperature inside the insert case reaches 221 degrees Fahrenheit. The second level is a fuse. Essentially, this will burn out when the fuse wire reaches 363 degrees Fahrenheit; at this point the fireplace insert is toast and would need to be replaced.
Equally important to the safeguards themselves is understanding what causes them to be activated.
- A malfunction occurs within the unit itself.
- The fireplace is plugged in incorrectly. Per the safety instructions, the fireplace must be plugged directly into the wall and not share an outlet with any other item.
