The video below demonstrates how to use a dowel.
It seems simple enough, but please note that the dowel should be inserted up to its middle.
- If the predrilled hole is too tight to accommodate this by hand, you can take a hammer and gently tap the dowel into place.
- If your dowel is too loose, this does not affect the structural integrity. Simply having the dowel in place will provide the needed stability. You may use some wood/carpenter's glue if you like, but it is not necessary.
Inserting this piece either too far or not far enough can cause damages to the furniture, broken dowels and added hassle. We have seen several instances where the dowel was not inserted far enough and pushed through the top of the connecting panel. If the dowel breaks off, it can be difficult to fish out of predrilled holes and will greatly impede assembly.
Because they are thicker and sturdier than nails or screws, dowels make strong mechanical joints when connecting parts and vastly improve the stability of the furniture. They also provide added support during assembly.
